Administrative Zone

A geographical, semi-political subdivision of Earth under the auspices of the UN. The African Administrative Zone (AfAZ) includes all land south of the Suez Canal. The North American Administrative Zone (NAmAZ) includes all land north of the Panama Canal. The South American Administrative Zone (SAmAZ) includes all land south of the Panama Canal. The European Administrative Zone (EAZ) includes all land west of longitude 29 degrees East. The Asian Administrative Zone (AAZ) includes all land east of longitude 29 degrees East (including the continent previously known as Australia). The Oceanic Administrative Zone (OAZ) includes all islands regardless of location.

Aikman, Paris

Daughter of Steadholder Joseph Aikman of Burning Man Steading. A crew member in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant and a member of the Final Flight.

Aircar

Personal transportation for intermediate-distance trips not suitable for foot/horse, lack of access by HyperLoop or too short a distance to justify a shuttle. Powered from RelSat-broadcast energy. There are several models: 2-person, 4-person, 6-person, 8-person, as well as aircars designed for cargo. With a maximum speed of 1,001.12 kilometers per hour, an aircar has unlimited range as long as a RelSat connection is available. An autopilot is available for use in longer trips. The solid-state processing unit, which uses molecules to process instructions, means that no maintenance is required. A bubble canopy is raised for ingress or egress. Aircars are not allowed within city limits.

Alabaster Range

One of the four major mountain ranges of the Crystal Highlands on Enya’s Gaia continent. The Alabaster Range extends eastward from the Crystal Nexus almost to the coast of the Great Northeastern Ocean and is the least impressive of Gaia’s four mountain ranges but does contain The Durda Deep. The Alabaster Range forms the southern boundary of Outback Quadrant and the northern boundary of East Farthing Quadrant.

Aragon River

A large river that originates in The Avalons and flows generally west and south through the Xanadu Quadrant. Approximately halfway along the river’s path to the Great Southwestern Ocean the Aragon branches into two slightly smaller rivers: The Elvira River that flows to the west and the CeeDee River that flows to the south. Both the CeeDee River and the Elvira River empty into the Great Southwestern Ocean.

The larger, northernmost of the two continents located in the hemisphere opposite Gaia.

Australian Violets

A creeping, evergreen perennial (Viola hederacea) from Earth that grows to about 10 centimeters tall and spreads widely by means of trailing stolons that root at the nodes. The leaves are kidney shaped and bright green in color. The purple and white flowers appear year around on Enya.

Avalons, The

One of the four major mountain ranges of the Crystal Highlands on Gaia. The Avalons extend south from the Crystal Nexus almost to the Great Southwestern Ocean. It forms the western boundary of East Farthing Quadrant and the eastern boundary of Xanadu Quadrant.

Aya-a

Colloquial term for Intipa Awachan, the central star around which Enya orbits. See Intipa Awachan.

Badlands, The

An area of Outback Quadrant bordering on the Great Northeastern Ocean characterized by extremely rough, rocky terrain containing a large percentage of Enya’s mineral reserves and the only source of Black Enyanite and White Enyanite. It is the location of Beaumont Lovett’s Stone Mountain Steading and his Stone Mountain Mining and Milling Company.

Barrier Reach

A 400-kilometer-wide channel separating the island of Elba from Land’s End. It is an area of rapid currents, undertows and dangerous marine life.

Base Clarke

A permanently occupied base once located on the far side of the moon in the South Pole-Aitken Basin, it was established in 2195 C.E. Its normal population of researchers, scientists and staff was around 200, although that figure varied from day to day.

Base Heinlein

A permanently occupied base once located on the Peary crater on the near side of the moon close to the lunar north pole. It was established in 2170 C.E. Its normal population of researchers, scientists and staff was around 200, although that figure varied from day to day.

Beautyberries

An indigenous plant almost identical to Earth’s Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), it grows profusely in Xanadu Quadrant but can be found throughout Gaia. A mature plant is between one and two meters high and one or two meters wide, with numerous purple berries grouped together at points along a spindly branch. While the Callicarpa americana of Earth is astringent, the Enyan Beautyberry contain a high level of fructose and is popular with native birds, animals and humans.

Before Current Era

A label used to denote a date before the traditionally reckoned year of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Beginning in the twenty-first century, it replaced the previous indicator, B.C. (or Before Christ).

Behan, Jason

A member of the Second Flight who explored the hallucinogenic properties of the moss-like ground cover found only in the Sherwood Forest. He became the first addict and the first casualty of the drug he named Xanadu Dreams.

Bigfoot

A mysterious, seldom-seen folklore being said to inhabit the forests of NAAmZ.

Black, Annie

Pilot of the shuttle Gossamer Five. A crewmember in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant and a member of the Final Flight.

Black Death Ground

The triple-canopy jungle covering the northern third of East Farthing Quadrant. It is bounded on the north by the Alabaster Range, on the east by the Great Northeastern Ocean and on the south by The Elderwoods. Its name derives from the death of Fiona Lambert from a black saber-toothed tiger while she was a member of Survey Team 42.

A wide, placid river originating in the foothills of the Crystal Highlands and terminating in Impact Harbor. It is navigable until it reaches its headwaters, a collection of tributaries called The Spaghetti Factory.

Buffadillo

A large, indigenous, grazing bovine that looks like a cross between a buffalo and an armadillo. It is about two-and-a-half meters in height, a meter-and-a-half in width and about four meters in length with a long tail and a carapace covering the body. A placid animal, it travels in huge herds. The meat tastes a lot like Earth’s prime rib but leaner. A male Buffadillo is called a bull, while a female Buffadillo is called an Elsie.

Burke House

The main residence of Burke Steading. It is modeled after the Evergreen Plantation house in the now-defunct political subdivision of Louisiana in the extinct country known as the United States of America. Build on a promontory jutting into Burke’s Bay, its most distinguishing features are the two sweeping staircases from the front grounds to the second-floor sleeping rooms’ balconies.

Burke, Kaitland Alba

Youngest of the three sisters who established the city of Three Sisters in 0002 E.T. She is the least intellectual but most beautiful of the Burke sisters. Nicknamed “Kati.”

One of the five crimes on Enya that subjects the perpetrator to banishment on the island of Elba. The five crimes are: murder, rape, human trafficking, gross bodily injury and material assistance in the commission of a capital crime.

A “car” of a HyperLoop “train.” A capsule is configured to carry either passengers or cargo.

Clearment

The primary construction material for buildings and streets in the twenty-third century. A transparent material that can be colored as desired, it is nearly indestructible.

Clydesdale

Clydesdales can grow to over 18 hands tall (1.82 meters ([6′]). Mature Clydesdales weigh between 597 and 895 kilograms. Clydesdales are bay or brown, black, sorrel, or Roan (white hair scattered throughout the coat). White legs are common, but black legs are often found. White spots can occur on the body. It has long, silky feathering on its legs with round feet, a broad forehead and a long, arched neck. Originally from the River Clyde area of Scotland. Zygotes brought from Earth.

Cohab(ater)

One of the parties in a contract between two or more individuals. Cohabitation replaced the institution of marriage on twenty-third century Earth and was continued on Enya. See Cohabitation Contract.

Cohabitation Contract

The act of two or more individuals (number, gender and familial status irrelevant) who have agreed to a contractual obligation outlining relationships between or among its cohabitees. There are only four required stipulations: (1) an expiration date, (2) children must be supported equally by the biological parents until the child is 16, (3) property held before execution of the contract is retained by its original owner and (4) common property is divided equally if and when the contract lapses. Contracts must be registered with the Vital Statistics Division of ECC’s Department of Human Services. Cohabitation contracts replaced civil and religious marriages on Earth.

A division of ECC’s Department of Land Management concerned with the management of piscatorial, agricultural and animal husbandry matters on Enya.

Comet Ximena

A comet that entered the Intipa Awachan star system from a distant star system. Its dust tail, which contained deadly microbes from an alien biological weapon laboratory, enveloped Enya for 39 days and killed all but 1,250 of the original 7,500 colonists. Dr. Sydney Mendeola, the comet’s discoverer, named the comet after his material grandmother.

A gathering held on the 15th of every month to celebrate the coming of age of any one turning 16 in that month. It is composed of several sections:

1. Initial introduction of the debutant(e).

3. The Walkabout: (debutant[e]) personally thanks those in the audience who have a special relationship to him/her.

4. The formal bow/curtsy.

5. A short dance period (the senior escort breaks in on the dance).

6. Introduction of the senior escort.

Creeping Jenny

A ground cover brought from Earth, Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) is a glossy, evergreen perennial that creates a carpet of low-growing, wandering stems covered in pairs of small, lime green, oval leaves. Its small, cup-shaped flowers bloom year around.

Crockagator

An indigenous predator that can reach a length of 12 meters and weigh 2,000 kilograms or more, is found throughout Gaia, primarily around water’s edge (especially swampy land), preying on fish and other marine or land animals. When hungry, the Crockagator will attack any animal in its territory, including humans, without warning. It is the equivalent of an Earth crocodile.

Crystal Highlands

Generic name for the four mountain belts on Gaia. The Crystal Highlands are composed of the Tejas Range (northern mountain belt), the Alabaster Range (eastern mountain belt), The Avalons (southern mountain belt) and The Smokies (western mountain belt).

Crystal Nexus

The large, ancient caldera located at the intersection of the Alabaster Range, The Smokies, the Tejas Range and The Avalons.

Currency

New Dollar, abbreviated N.D. The slang term is “Indy.” See also New Dollar.

Current Era

E. T.

E-cat

An indigenous mammal analogous to an Earth cat (Felis catus) with minor canine characteristics. It is found primarily in Sherwood Forest but is also found in East Farthing Quadrant. Not including the tail, the adult E-cat is about a meter long and stands approximately 40 centimeters tall. The slender body sits atop four muscular legs ending in six-toed paws tipped by retractable claws. The head is triangular with cat-like whiskers extending 10 or 12 centimeters from either side of a wide nose. The eyes are large, almond-shaped and are amber, blue or green with vertical, black irises. The ears are pointed and furry, much like the ears of a German shepherd, but smaller. The short, soft-looking fur can be mottled or monochromatic, with earth tones predominate. Pure black or pure white fur is rare. It is diurnal in nature and, although omnivorous, is predominantly carnivorous. A young E-cat is called a kitten.

E-pedia

Originally named The Data Project, the E-pedia is a database of information gleaned from numerous data systems on Earth. It was designed to be a “human encyclopedia” of knowledge for the colonists to take with them to Enya. The “investigators” involved in accumulating the entries destined for the E-pedia were indiscriminate in their data mining and often hacked secure systems and added their contents to the project. The E-pedia is accessible from any Infotainment Room or PADD utilizing the capabilities of Relay Satellites. The entirety of the E-pedia is located in a massive memory bank in the basement of the Executive Building and also parceled out piecemeal to every other memory system (Infotainment Rooms, commbands and PADDs) on Enya for safety.

Earth Day

Celebrated on April 15^th, the day the last survivors of the space stations orbiting Earth and the two Lunar bases landed on Enya in 0002, it commemorates the death of all red-blooded animals on Earth from Heininger’s Profile.

East Farthing Quadrant

The southeast quadrant of Gaia bordered on the north by the Alabaster Range, on the west by The Avalons and on the east by the Great Northeastern Ocean and the Great Southeastern Ocean. There are three distinct biomes in the East Farthing Quadrant: a triple-canopy jungle in the north, an old-growth forest in the center and a Serengeti-like area in the south.

Elba

A large island south of East Farthing Quadrant comprised of thick, evergreen forests; undulating plains; numerous spring-fed lakes and a medium-sized mountain range on the north. It is surrounded by The Calamity Sea and is separated from the Land’s End peninsula by the Barrier Reach.

Elderwoods, The

A forest in the center portion of East Farthing Quadrant composed primarily of Elderwood trees. The forest is bordered on the north by the Elder River and on the south by the Raimbault River and the Tamara River.

Elli

Name given to the shuttle Gossamer One by its pilot, Jean-Pierre Paul. Elli was his grandmother’s name.

Ellis, Mahogany

Administrative Assistant to the head of ECC’s Department of Human Services. A crew member in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant.

Elvira River

A branch of the Aragon River in East Farthing Quadrant which flows southwesterly until it empties into the Great Southwestern Ocean.

A medical person who specializes in providing on-site care to an individual involved in an accident or incident.

English Ivy

Brought from Earth, English Ivy (Hedera helix) has large leaves that are trefoil shaped with pointed ends and distinctive, pale veins. It produces long trailers up to 30 meters in length and is not only a ground cover but a tenacious, climbing vine.

Enya

The third planet orbiting the star Intipa Awachan (originally designated HP 56948) in the constellation Draco, approximately 200 light years from Earth. It is an Earth twin discovered by the Snyder Enterprises’ XO-planet Survey Team and the site of humankind’s first interstellar colony. Enya is named after Daniel Snyder’s deceased cohab, Enya Laertes Snyder. Enya’s mean radius is 6,000 km, its equatorial radius is 6,006 kilometers, the polar radius is 5,986 kilometers and its equatorial circumference is 37,699.1 kilometers. The total surface area is 453,385,000 square kilometers and has a volume is 904,778,642,228 cubic kilometers. Enya’s Sidereal rotation period is 26 hours, its orbital period (Julian year) is 420 days and its axial tilt is 12.7 degrees. The minimum surface temperature is 0 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature is 45 degrees Celsius, and the average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius.

Enya Colonization Corporation

Organization created by Daniel Snyder to colonize the planet Enya. Anderson Lovett was its first CEO.

Enyan Time

A time label indicating that the indicated date occurred after 1500 on January 1, 0001 (the time Gossamer One landed on Enya). A day on Enya lasts 26 hours and each of the 12 months has 35 days, giving it a 420-day year.

Enyanite

A metamorphic rock that exists in two forms: White and Black. It is Enya’s version of Earth’s marble. White Enyanite almost perfectly replicates Pentelic marble from Mount Pentelicus in the now-extinct country of Greece. Black Enyanite duplicates Nero Marquina marble found in the north of the now-extinct country of Spain, but without white tendrils. The three most notable similarities between Enyanite and marble are that it can be polished to a high luster, it is translucent and it neutralizes acid. The biggest difference is that Enyanite has a Mons hardness number of six rather than marble’s three. The Wall of Memories in Gossamer Greens is made from Black Enyanite and the Wall of Honor in the same Gossamer Greens is made from White Enyanite. Enyanite is found only in The Badlands area of Outback Quadrant.

Eryk

The middle-sized of three moons orbiting Enya. It is named after Daniel Woodhouse Snyder and Enya Ono Snyder’s middle daughter.

Eryn

The smallest of three moons orbiting Enya. It is named after Daniel Woodhouse Snyder and Enya Ono Snyder’s youngest daughter.

Estimated Time of Arrival

The time projected for the arrival at a particular destination based on speed, distance and individual-specific experience calculations.

Eveyan

The largest of three moons orbiting Enya. It has Jupiter-like rings and is named after Daniel Woodhouse Snyder and Enya Ono Snyder’s oldest daughter.

Executive Building

The headquarters of ECC on Enya. Located where the Brandywine River empties into Impact Harbor, it is composed of a central, hexagonal building which is the residence of ECC’s CEO and contains a large meeting room and the central computer system for the planet. The center building is encircled by six rectangular, office buildings (called annexes) radiating from the center building, one for each ECC department.

Field, Judge Randolph

Chief Justice of Enya. Head of ECC’s Department of Justice and member of the BOD. Survived the election of May 05, 0008 E.T. He has one of Pixel’s kittens named Calico Jack.

Final Flight

The colloquial term for the last shuttle flight to spray Phantacide on Xanadu Dreams in Sherwood Forest.

Finance, Department of

One of ECC’s six departments responsible for all facets of fiscal policy. Divisions include the Bank of Enya, the Compensation Board and the Economic Council. Its departmental color is copper.

First Flight

The initial group of 7,500 colonists transported to Enya in 2238 C.E. aboard the colony ship Gossamer Wings.

Fisher, Brendon

A member of the Second Flight and resident of Starlight addicted to Xanadu Dreams.

Forelock Farm

A ranch in NWT that specializes in breeding and training Arabian horses.

Fullbright, Domino

Gaia

The largest of the three continents on Enya, it covers 80% of one entire hemisphere. Four mountain ranges meet at the Crystal Nexus and divide Gaia into four unequal quadrants: Northwest Territory, Outback, Xanadu and East Farthing.

Gateway

Headquarters of the ECC on Earth. It is located on the former site of the Laughlin Air Force Base, eight kilometers east of the mostly abandoned city of Del Rio in the now-extinct political unit previously known as the State of Texas in the area of the NAmAz once called the United States of America.

Gathering Room

The twenty-third century term for a living room or great room.

Godzillapede

A large, indigenous, centipedal arthropod growing up to four meters in length and two meters in height. Its hundreds of legs and “feet” are black. It has large mandibles which move horizontally and allows the scavenger to eat detritus from the forest floor. Resembles a pale-yellow centipede crossed with a worm. Frightening but harmless. Named by CeeDee Lovett.

Gossamer Greens

The 400-hectare park in Starlight centered on the original landing spot of Gossamer One. In the center of Gossamer Greens is Eternal Lake, containing the Eternal Flame. Situated at 120-degree points around Eternal Lake are the Wall of Memories, the Wall of Honor and the retired shuttle Gossamer One.

Gossamer One through Six

One of the six, 25-person shuttles carried aboard the colony ship Gossamer Wings to transport personnel and cargo. Gossamer One was the first shuttle in the fleet and the first shuttle to land on Enya. It is now a part of Gossamer Greens.

Gossamer Wings

The colony ship built by ECC to transport volunteers to the planet Enya. The name Gossamer Wings came from the appearance of the large solar panels attached to the engineering section and the living section of the ship which suggested a partially reconstructed, anonymous poem entitled Gossamer Wings.

Great Enyan Land Rush

The name given by the colonists to the land grant lottery held on the Living on Enya show. Each First Flight colonist pre-registered five choices (in priority order) from the total number of 3,000-hectare plots on the continent of Gaia. Fifty names were randomly drawn each evening and the winners granted the first available parcel on their list. Individuals had seven days to register their land. Any parcel not registered in time was returned to the pool. At the end of the lottery, any unclaimed parcels reverted to ECC.

Great Enyan Ocean

The planet-wide ocean on Enya. The equator divides it into the Great Enyan Ocean North and the Great Enyan Ocean South. Colloquial usage calls the Great Enyan Ocean North to the west of Gaia the Great Northwestern Ocean and the Great Enyan Ocean North to the east of Gaia the Great Northeastern Ocean. The same colloquial terminology applies to the Great Enyan Ocean South, i.e., the Great Southeastern Ocean is south of the equator and east of Gaia and the Great Southwestern Ocean is south of the equator and west of Gaia.

Gregoria

Fourth planet of the Intipa Awachan star system which orbits at a distance of 1.6 Astronomical Units from the system’s central star. It has a diameter of 18,000 kilometers and is named after one of the characters in the Saint Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins myth of Earth’s Middle Ages.

Grim Reaper

The Enyan equivalent of Earth’s Portuguese Man-O’-War. While the venom in a Man-O’-War’s tentacles is extremely painful, the venom of the Grim Reaper is a nerve agent. It quickly causes pupil contraction, profuse salivation, convulsions, involuntary urination and defecation and eventual death by asphyxiation as control over respiratory muscles is lost. The period between contact and death can be in as little as 30 minutes, depending upon the inherent health of the victim and the volume of venom received.

Hardesty, Dr. Julian

Lovett family physician. First Surgeon General of Enya. Delivered all of Minuet Ono Hays Lovett’s children and was their family physician thereafter. Delivered all of Cheyenne Dawn Lovett’s children. Dr. LoriLyn Carpenter’s cohab. Has one of Pixel’s female kittens named Tabitha. He named his commband “Scully.”

Heard, Atari

Replaced Dasi Cunningham as head of ECC’s Department of Finance. Replaced by Zaros Lynx during election of 05/05/08. A crew member in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant.

Heininger, Dr. Hobart

Nobel Prize-wining nanoscientist working at NKL. Developed Heininger’s Profile. One of two survivors of the Supernado of 2238. Committed suicide.

Heininger’s Profile

A biological nanite created by Dr. Hobart Heininger that consumed red blood cells and reproduced exponentially every 12 hours, causing increasingly serious Hemolytic Anemia. Once the nanite population in an individual reached approximately 50 percent of the number of red blood cells in the body (about 17 trillion for humans)Bapproximately 528 hours post-infection Bdeath occurred from progressive organ failure. The mortality rate was 100 percent.

HemoSnyth

Developed in 2200, HemoSynth is an artificial blood product delivered intravenously to combat extreme blood loss, especially that blood loss associated with serious trauma. It reverses hypotension within minutes, regardless of blood type or Rh factor, improves clotting and provides the patient’s own blood with increased anti-inflammatory action. HemoSynth is an integral part of trauma care protocols.

Hermione Freehold

A small town located on the southern boundary of Stone Mountain Steading in Outback Quadrant created in 0003 E.T. by Beaumont Lovett to house the employees of Stone Mountain Mining and Milling Company and their families.

Hill Country

An area of gently rolling hills in Xanadu Quadrant north of the Elvira River and west of The Avalons, extending northward from the Sherwood Forest to the foothills of The Smokies and includes the Silver Woods.

Hoage, Stephen

A member of the 101st Combat Squadron flying the Shiva all-weather, all-mission fighter from an airbase on an island in the AAZ once called Taiwan. His plane’s Modex number was 317 and his call sign was “Booty.” Original head of EEC’s Department of Land Management. Replaced by Lorién Steele when he replaced Anderson Lovett as CEO in 0001 E.T. Replaced in turn by Jefferson Lincoln Kellogg in the election of 05/05/08. A crew member in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant. Favorite drink: Platinum Pilsner beer. Nicknamed “Steve.”

Holovid

A portmanteau of “holographic” and “video,” it is a holographic production of fictional or non-fictional entertainment akin to “movies” and “shows” that were popular prior to the 23^rd Century. A holovid is a mainstay of every Infotainment Center.

One of ECC’s six departments responsible for the health, well-being and education of all citizens. Divisions include Surgeon General, Education and Training, Vital Statistics and Historian. The department color is Peacock blue.

HyperLoop

The HyperLoop is a network of paired, three-meter-in-diameter, transparent tubes made of ALON (aluminum oxynitride with a cubic spinel crystal structure) perched on top of self-correcting, six-meter-tall pillars spaced 100 meters apart which connect all major cities on Gaia. There are 28 capsules (term used for each “car”), composed of 30-passenger capsules and/or 2,500-kilogram capacity, cargo-carrying capsules in each “convoy,” which use magnetic levitation at near-vacuum-level pressure to travel at speeds in excess of 1,500 kilometers per hour. Receivers on the tube’s roof receive the output of RelSats to power the capsules. In case of power failure or emergencies, the single convoy operator (stationed in the lead car and appropriately trained in both HyperLoop operations and emergency medical techniques) can activate blow-out panels in the tube walls for rapid passenger egress. The SCC in Starlight is automatically notified of the nature of an incident, the exact location of the convoy and the convoy’s manifest.

Impact Harbor

The crater caused by a large meteorite fall approximately a billion years (there is some disagreement over the exact date) before the colonists arrived on the planet. From an aerial view, Impact Harbor looks like a bite was taken out of the continent’s western shoreline, leaving behind a 400-kilometer-in-diameter semicircle filled with deep, still waters that eventually escape through the mouth of Impact Harbor into the part of Great Northwestern Ocean called the Orinoco Flow. It is approximately 600 kilometers north of the equator in the Xanadu Quadrant at the mouth of the Brandywine River and is the site of Enya’s capital city of Starlight.

Incident Commander

The person responsible for all aspects of an emergency response; including quickly developing incident objectives, managing all incident operations, application of resources as well as responsibility for all persons involved.

Individual Survival Kit

Small kit designed to fit in a particular uniform leg pocket. Every individual traveling to Enya was required to carry an ISK. An ISK must also be carried by every member of the UNPF.

Indy

Colloquial term for New Dollar, the currency of Enya.

Infotainment Room

A room in every Enyan house dedicated to entertainment, information and communications. Each one contains comfortable seats, a beverage bar, a small “stage” for 3D holographic projections and a computer connected by RelSats to the E-pedia and every communications device on Enya.

One of ECC’s six departments responsible for planning, creating, installing and maintaining all essential services including recycling, transportation and utilities. Divisions include Sanitation, Intersectional and Public Transportation. The department’s color is blue violet.

InstaGlove

An aerosol spray that creates a protective barrier on the skin to prevent bodily contact with things such as plants, animals and substances which may be toxic. It is used extensively by scientists and medical personnel and replaces disposable Latex gloves.

Intipa Awachan

A Class G5V star in the constellation Draco approximately 200 light years from Earth with 12 planets. The third planet is Enya, site of humankind’s first interstellar colony. It was originally named HP 56948.

Intravenous Line

A soft, flexible tube placed inside a vein to give a person medicine, nanites or fluids.

Ladybug

Enyan equivalent of an Earth beetle called a ladybug (Coccinellidae). The carapace can be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo or violet. Female ladybugs have numerous black spots while the male has no spots. A Ladybug can be up to 15 centimeters in diameter. It flies poorly.

Lovettschyr Manor

The main house on Lovettschyr Steading built in a Sherwood Forest clearing on the banks of the CeeDee River. It is a two-story building modeled after English/Scottish country houses of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with a full-length, subterranean room that includes a garage, several storage rooms, a mechanical room and a deep water well. The first floor has a large kitchen with an eat-in breakfast nook for eight, a walk-in pantry and cold room, a gathering room with a half bath, a large formal dining room seating 22 people, a recreation room, a mud room, a large patio, a library with a half bath and a foyer. The second floor has 10 bedrooms, each with a private bath, a walk-in closet and a balcony accessible through French doors. Floors are either Enyanite or Sequoia planking. There is a large garden adjacent to the covered patio and flower beds, shrubs and other ornamental flora surround the manor. Designed by Rebecca Mari “Buns” Zumwalt and Cheyenne Dawn Lovett. Construction began on 04/30/0002 and was occupied 10/35/0002.

Lovettschyr Steading

The 6,000-hectare steading held by Cheyenne Dawn Lovett and Hari Paynter Rockwell. It is located in the Sherwood Forest of Xanadu Quadrant and is approximately 4,420 kilometers south of Starlight. It includes a portion of the CeeDee River. “Schyr” is the ancient Scottish word for shire.

Manna Fruit

Manna Tree

Indigenous plant first discovered on the shores of Looking Glass Lake, its egg-shaped fruit is smaller than a cantaloupe; yellowish-orange on the outside and apricot on the inside; weighs about a kilogram each; and is covered by a light down, much like that of an Earth peach. The center of the fruit is filled with small, spherical seeds surrounded by firm, extremely sweet and delicious pericarp. Manna fruit is a popular source of iron and other essential minerals. It is served either sliced or made into a jelly and is found only in Xanadu Quadrant.

Master Gunnery Chief

The most senior enlisted person in the UNPF(G). A MGC specializes in personal weapons (those carried by all UNPF personnel), crew-served weapons (operated by more than one person) and self-defense.

McCloud, Jet

Me-Too Bird

An indigenous avian named for the sound of its repetitive call, which sounds like the words “me” and “too.” Diurnal in nature, it feeds on fruits, plants, seeds and various small animals. Has a body length (sans tail) of around 60 centimeters and a weight of around two kilograms. Females are bright blue while males are gray.

Medical Analyzer

A multipurpose, diagnostic tool designed to scan a body or a specimen to reveal its internal state or to determine toxicity of a substance.

Meditor

A customizable medical sensor device placed on an individual’s body to monitor specific bodily functions. It is less than a millimeter in depth and its length and width is dependent upon the number of separate functions it monitors. When any parameter programmed by the prescribing physician is exceeded, the patch turns red and sends an alarm to a designated medical facility. The name is a portmanteau of “Medical” and “Monitor.”

Memory Unit

A term for a portable storage device holding a variable amount of computer data using molecules of Silicon. There are several standard sizes of memory units, ranging from 1 gigabyte (100⁴ bytes) to 6.023×10²² bytes. See also Molecular Memory.

Microcooker

The twenty-third century’s more effective and efficient version of the microwave.

Midnight

The black, male kitten of Pixel that “adopted” Friday Lyn Lovett.

Military Time

On Earth, time had been measured by the “24-hour clock,” indicating that the hours ranged from 0000 to 2359, as opposed to a repeated “1 to 12” as had been utilized for centuries. On Enya, time ranged from 0000 to 2559.

Mocklate

Indigenous bush with bark that, if seeped in boiling water and then allowed to evaporate, leaves behind a residue that can be ground into a powder that tastes like rich, dark chocolate. It is often mixed into milk or water (hot or cold) and is a popular beverage.

Molecular Memory

Computer memory device which uses the molecules in a variable quantity of Silicon as memory, usually in 1 Terabyte increments. See also Memory Unit.

NKL was Earth’s premier nanite laboratory and was led by Noble Prize winner Dr. Hobart Heininger. It was destroyed by the Supernado of 2239 C.E.

Needlepoint Ivy

Indigenous ivy-like plant with elegant, variegated leaves adorned with three to five sharply pointed lobes. The leaves are small and set close together. Needlepoint Ivy grows profusely in either shade or light and may produce runners up to two meters in length.

Nelson, Robert

A server at The Last Exit.

Nettlepus

Indigenous bush with pointed, red leaves and conifer-cone-looking strobilae on the branches. The bush expels barbed nettles containing a paralytic agent from the cones when a suitable meal is detected close by or the plant is disturbed. Once the victim is helpless, the Nettlepus extends tentacles from the base of its trunk to envelope and digest the victim. The tentacles are slow moving and can be avoided or severed with little effort, especially by a large victim who is less susceptible to the nettles’ poison. Discovered and named by Cheyenne Dawn Lovett.

New Dollar

Primary currency used on Enya.

New Serengeti

An area of southern East Farthing nearly identical to the environment of the Serengeti on Earth in the AfAZ. It is bordered on the north by the Raimbault River and the Tiara River, on the west by The Avalons and on the east and south by the Great Southwestern Ocean.

NKL

Nomenclature Council

A division of ECC’s Department of Land Management responsible for approving and recording the names of all geographical features, fauna, and flora on Enya. It is composed of two parts: individuals who are permanent members of the Council and those who volunteer on a rotating bass. A steadholder may name any geological feature that exists wholly within the boundaries of his or her Steadhold; however, the name must be registered with the Council in a timely manner. The Council names any geographical feature that extends through more than one Steadhold.

Northfork Ranch

A 3,000-hectare ranch in NWT just outside Three Sisters that breeds, raises and butchers Buffadillos. It is owned and operated by Tom and Alicia Landry.

Northwest Territory Quadrant

The northwestern quadrant of Gaia, bounded on the south by The Smokies, on the north and west by the Great Northwestern Ocean and on the east by the Tejas Range. It is an area of deep, fecund loam and numerous rivers and streams. Because the quadrant contains the majority of Enyan farms and ranches, it is often call the “The Breadbasket of Enya.” Colloquially referred to as “NWT.”

Ohai, Dr. Kai

A political scientist with a doctorate from Harvard University on Earth. His dissertation was entitled Ancient and Archaic Forms of National Governing Systems Prior to the Introduction of a World Government: An Investigation into Their Schemata and the Causes of Their Ultimate Failures. He was born on the island of Oahu in the extinct political sub-division called the State of Hawaii in the area of NAAmZ called the United States of America.

Ommadawn Archipelago

A collection of seven small island approximately 700 kilometers west of Impact Harbor in the Great Northwestern Ocean, separated from Gaia by the Orinoco Flow. Islands in the archipelago include Coriolis Caye (the largest) which is south of Moonraker Island and east of T’gallant Isle, Moonraker Island (northernmost island), Equator Island (the southernmost island, bisected by the equator), T’gallant Isle (west of Coriolis Caye), Piquoet Rock (west of Tops’l Mount and south of T’gallant Isle), Tops’l Mount (south of Coriolis Caye and north of Equator Island) and Spinnaker Bank (east of Tops’l Mount).

Operations, Department of

One of ECC’s six departments responsible for providing essential services to the population of Enya, developing new services and maintaining equipment and facilities used to provide those services. Divisions include Global Utilities, Recycling, Maintenance and Security. The department color is orange.

Orinoco Flow

A 700-kilometer-wide body of water separating the western coast of Gaia from the Ommadawn Archipelago in the Great Northwestern Ocean.

Outback Quadrant

The northeastern quadrant of Gaia. On the west side, the Tejas Range separates Outback Quadrant from NWT. On the south side is the Alabaster Range, separating the quadrant from East Farthing Quadrant, while the Great Northeastern Ocean laps at its north and east coastlines. The quadrant holds Enya’s richest mineral deposits beneath an and area of the quadrant of extremely rugged and often inhospitable topography called The Badlands. It is the location of the only known source of Enyanite. The remainder of the Outback is relatively benign.

Paul, Jean-Pierre

Original pilot of the shuttle Gossamer One. Now the senior shuttle pilot who supervises other pilots and co-pilots and is responsible for their actions. A crew member in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant. Nicknamed “JPP.”

Peacekeeper

Long rifle utilized by members of the United Nations’ Peacekeeping Forces. It is an outgrowth of the coil gun of the twenty-first century and utilizes ceramic magnets to propel a five-centimeter, finned dart at a muzzle velocity of 4,500 meters per second. Each magazine holds 100 darts, which can be fired in either semi- or fully automatic mode. The Peacekeeper uses the same ammunition as the Peacemaker. The United Nations outlawed possession of personal weapons by civilians in 2115 C.E. On Enya, training and use of a Peacekeeper is restricted to individuals over the age of 16.

Peacemaker

Sidearm issued to all members of the United Nations’ Peacekeeping Forces. It is an outgrowth of the coil gun of the twenty-first century and utilizes ceramic magnets to propel a five-centimeter, finned dart at a muzzle velocity of 1,500 meters per second. The Peacemaker uses the same ammunition as the Peacekeeper. The United Nations outlawed possession of personal weapons by civilians in 2115 C.E. Penney, James

Co-pilot of the shuttle Gossamer Two. A member of the Final Flight.

Percheron

A draft horse originating in the Perche providence of France first used as a warhorse. It can weigh more than 1,100 kilograms and stand up to 2 meters tall. It has a muscular build; a broad, flat forehead; small, upright ears and an arched neck.

Personal Aerial Vehicle

Personal transportation for intermediate-distance trips not suitable for foot/horse, lack of access by HyperLoop or too short a distance to justify a shuttle. Powered from RelSat-broadcast energy. There are several models: 2-person, 4-person, 6-person, 8-person, as well as aircars designed for cargo. Their maximum speed is 1,001.12 kilometers per hour and has unlimited range as long as a RelSat connection is available. An autopilot is available for use in longer trips. The solid-state processing unit, which uses molecules to process instructions, means that no maintenance is required. A bubble canopy is raised for ingress or egress. PAVs are not allowed within city limits. The colloquial term for a PAV is “aircar.”

Personal Assistant Digital Device

A combination of the obsolete computer, a laptop and a tablet, it has nine terabytes of memory and a sophisticated suite of wide-ranging programs. Compact and powerful, it is ubiquitous on Enya

Personal Rapid-Transit System

Electric transportation used in all cities on Enya (private conveyances such as air cars are prohibited within city limits). Shaped like an upside-down bowl, each vehicle is guided to its destination by a computer utilizing sensors embedded in the roadway. One calls a PERT at a PERT Station and the closest, empty, appropriate-sized PERT (one to 12 passengers) is dispatched to that location to take passengers to their destination. The cargo version has a larger entrance hatch and reinforced flooring.

An area located at one corner of each street intersection in a city used to call for, enter and exit PERT vehicles.

Petranova, Laika

Head of the Land Grants Division of the Department of Land Management. A crew member in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant.

 Phantacide

A herbicide developed by Dr. Adiemus Spandeau, Dr. Cristina Spandeau and Dr. Trinity Quinn which kills only Xanadu Dreams. The herbicide is red colored to indicate a sprayed area.

Pixel

The pregnant E-cat that “adopted” Cheyenne Dawn Lovett while she was lost in Sherwood Forest.

Plains of Rodin

Vast area of plains making up the majority of NWT. It is composed of deep, rich loam and numerous small rivers and streams.

A document outlining how ECC operates. Among other procedures, it lays out the way BOD meetings are held.

Quadrant

One of the four, unequal sections into which Enya’s largest continent, Gaia, is divided. Their names are East Farthing, Northwest Territory, Outback and Xanadu.

Quinn, Dr. Trinity

A biochemist who helped Drs. Adiemus and Cristina Spandeau of the MCSS create a post-emergent, systemic, selective herbicide called Phantacide that kills only Xanadu Dreams. Nicknamed “Trini.”

Raimbault River

The longest river in East Farthing Quadrant, it originates in The Avalons and initially flows eastward but turns northward into the depths of Black Death Ground. It then turns south until it splits into the Tamara River and the Tiara River. The Raimbault River and the Tamara River form the southern border of The Elderwoods while the Raimbault River and the Tiara River form the northern border of The New Serengeti.

Rainbow Trout

An indigenous fish-equivalent with multiple dorsal and pelvic fins. Its pectoral fins are much larger than an Earthen fish and look like those of a Koi (Cyprinus rubrofuscus). The caudal fin, or tail, is horizontal, not vertical, and matches the pectoral fins in size. A wide mouth is filled with tiny, razor-sharp teeth. It does not have scales but is covered instead by a tough skin like that of an Earth catfish. The skin is stripped off before cooking. The dorsal side of the fish presents the colors of a rainbow in layers, which fades into white of the ventral side.

Reclaimer

A small, specialized Universal Replication Matrix located in the kitchen which transforms used dishes, utensils, cookware and bake ware into raw materials and uses those materials to create new dishes, utensils, cookware and bake ware upon demand. The Kitchen Copier automatically credits and debits the house account in the Bank of Enya as appropriate.

Relay Satellite

A satellite placed in geosynchronous orbit around Enya that receives the energy produced by SolSats and retransmits that power to Enya’s surface. RelSats also incorporate a Global Positioning System (GPS) transmitter; equipment to make meteorological observations and forecasts; a high-resolution, steerable camera; and a communications relay system for PADDs, desktop computers and commband units. Hundreds of RelSats will eventually be placed in orbit around Enya to provide power to the planet’s entire surface.

Remox

A portmanteau of “remains” and “box.” The 27.488 centimeter by 16.989 centimeter by 10.500 centimeter box (dimensions in accordance with the Golden Proportion [1.618::1]) made from a synthetic, figure-grained, dark wood used to hold an individual’s ashes on Enya. It has a capacity of 4,903.433 cm³ (299.226 in³ (cremated remains ratio: 1 pound ‘ 1in³). It has a gold plate on one end with the individual’s name, date of birth and date of death. The lid is secured by a gold piano hinge and a golden latch with a miniature lock.

Robber Baron

An indigenous avian that prefers to steal food from another rather than forage for itself. Its body is an iridescent, Grackle-black and the pointed beak is bright orange.

Rodin River

A long river in NWT that flows over 3,000 kilometers westward from the Tejas Range until it branches into the Rodin River North and the Rodin River South.

Rodin River North

Approximately 780 kilometers from the coast of the Great Northwestern Ocean, the Rodin River separates into two branches. This branch flows northward and westward from its point of separation until it terminates on the coast of Burke’s Bay.

Rodin River South

Approximately 780 kilometers from the coast of NWT, the Rodin River separates into two branches. This branch flows southward and westward until it terminates on the coast of the Great Northwestern Ocean.

Saber-toothed Tiger

An indigenous mammal with many of the characteristics of Earth’s saber-toothed tiger that died out around 11,000 B.C.E. It is a cathermeral, primarily carnivorous mammal with maxillary incisors that, in a large specimen, may be as long as 50 centimeters. The female lives in the Black Death Ground of East Farthing Quadrant and travels during mating season through The Elderwoods to the edge of The New Serengeti where the males live. After mating, the female returns to the jungle to have a litter of six to eight kittens while the male remains in The New Serengeti. Both male and female are territorial and extremely dangerous. The soft fur is black in females and dappled in males.

Seagull

An indigenous bird, primarily white with a gray head, wing tips and tail-feather tips found up to 100 kilometers inland of Enya’s coastlines. Its wingspan can reach two meters and its body can weigh up to 10 kilograms. Seagulls are known to travel up to 1,200 kilometers a day by using air currents and drafts. They feed on any creature smaller than themselves.

SeaSilk

Also known as Byssus Cloth, Sea Silk is an expensive material made from a bundle of filaments secreted by bivalve mollusks which attach the mollusks to a solid surface. The filaments are detached and made into a thin, soft fabric which, because of the difficulties involved in finding the mollusks and processing the filaments, is extremely expensive. If soaked in lemon juice, SeaSilk attains a permanent, golden color. Clothes made from Sea Silk are airy, light and extremely comfortable, all attributes highly prized on a planet with only a 12.7-degree axis tilt. The manufacturing process is lengthy and complicated.

Seed Bank

A repository for angiosperm and gymnosperm seeds from Earth plants and indigenous plants. The seeds are provided free upon request. The Seed Bank is operated by the Comestibles Division of Department of Land Management and is located in Starlight.

Sequoia Tree

A long-lived, indigenous evergreen tree that can reach heights of 200 meters with trunks up to three meters in diameter. Its bark is felt-like and difficult to damage. Its leaves are white and green, variegated, roughly circular in shape and about 20 centimeters in diameter. They comprise the majority of trees in Sherwood Forest. Its fine-textured, dense wood is a mirror image of Earth’s Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa). It is often stained to bring out its orange and reddish-brown grain. The wood contains an oil that gives Sequoia planks a strong order of freshly brewed coffee.

Shepard Moons

A term used for the times all three of Enya’s moons, Eryn, Eryk and Eveyan, appeared in the night’s sky simultaneously.

Sherwood Forest

A huge forest in the southern-most area of Xanadu Quadrant composed primarily of Sequoia trees . It is bordered by the Great Southwestern Ocean on the south and west and extends northward until it segues into the Hill Country in the area of the Aragon River.

Shiva

The all-purpose, all-weather aircraft used by the UNPF(A) to enforce UN dictates. It was highly computerized and carried a single pilot.

Sickness, The

The name bestowed by the survivors on the period some six months after landing on Enya when a mysterious disease killed all but 1,125 of the 7,500 original colonists. The colonists discovered the source of the pandemic (the ruins of a biological laboratory on the nucleus of Comet Ximena built millions of years previously by a now-extinct, alien race), but never made the connection between the source and the illness.

Silver

Kourtland Alba Burke’s Clydesdale mare stabled at Burke House in NWT for use by Kourtland Alba Burke.

Silver Birch Tree

The Silver Birch is a tall, elegant, indigenous tree with drooping branches and eye-catching, white bark. It is known for the way the bark peels off in strips, which allows it to grow faster. The Silver Birch has serrated, triangular leaves and the edge of the leaf is doubly toothed. Silver Birch trees have both male and female flowers (catkins) on the same tree which are normally white, but red and pink specimens can be found.

Silver Woods, The

A forest in the center of Xanadu Quadrant composed primarily of Silver Birch trees. It is bordered on the west by the Reflection River and Looking Glass Lake, on the south by the Aragon and South Fork rivers, on the north by The Spaghetti Factory and on the east by The Avalons.

Simpson, Roger

Main dealer in Starlight of the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams. Nicknamed “Rog.”

SkyeKing Ranch

A ranch in Gaia’s NWT specializing in breeding and training Clydesdale and Percheron horses. It is owned and operated by Skye Mueller and her cohab, King Behan.

Snyder, Daniel Woodhouse

The late President and CEO of Snyder Enterprises. He was Earth’s first trillionaire. Created ECC. Assassinated before Gossamer Wings departed Earth for Enya.

Snyder Enterprises

An Earth-wide company composed of many smaller organizations. It was the primary vehicle for its creator and CEO, Daniel Woodhouse Snyder, to become Earth’s first trillionaire. ECC was a member of the conglomerate.

Solar Satellite

A satellite that generates electricity using gigantic, high-efficiency solar panels and transmits that power to RelSats. There will eventually be eight SolSats in orbit around Enya: four above the North Pole and four above the South Pole.

A branch of the Reflection River which travels south and east until it merges with the Aragon River north of Sherwood Forest.

Space Station L-4

The space station in a Lissajous orbit at Earth’s Lagrange Point 4. Constructed in 2210 C.E., Station L-4was a scientific and medical research laboratory with a normal population of 200 individuals (scientists, administrators, service and military personnel). Station L-4 orbited a point in space 384,900 kilometers from Earth and ahead of the Moon by the same distance. It was evacuated of personnel during the Rescue Run.

An area in Xanadu Quadrant just south of The Smokies and west of The Avalons containing seven water courses that make up the headwaters of Looking Glass Lake and the Brandywine River. Survey Team 23 proposed the following names: Vermicelli Creek, Rivo Ziti, Lasagna Run, Linguine Beck, Macaroni Brook, Orzo Burn and Gnocchi Branch.

Spandeau, Dr. Adiemus Karl

A microbiologist with both a PhD and MD working in the Mendeola Center for Science Studies in Starlight. Along with his cohab, Dr. Cristina Spandeau, developed an antidote to the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams and helped create a post-emergent, systemic, selective herbicide called Phantacide that kills Xanadu Dreams.

Spandeau, Dr. Maria Cristina

A macrobiologist working in the Mendeola Center for Science Studies in Starlight. Along with her cohab, Dr. Adiemus K. Spandeau, developed an antidote to the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams and helped create a post-emergent, systemic, selective herbicide called Phantacide that kills Xanadu Dreams.

St. James, Vallejo

Starlight

Located at the initial landing site of the shuttle Gossamer Wings at the junction of the Brandywine River and Impact Harbor in Xanadu Quadrant. The capital of Enya, it was established on January 1, 0001 E.T.

Starlight Medical Center

The first medical treatment facility built on Enya, it is now used as an adjunct to the Xanadu Regional Hospital and provides outpatient care.

Starlight Station

The HyperLoop facility in Starlight that receives and dispatches passenger and/or cargo convoys. It is a multi-level building and includes platforms for passenger capsules, docks for loading and unloading cargo capsules, a repair facility and a commercial area with shops and a food court. Departures leave from the top level, arrivals occur on the second level, cargo is loaded and unloaded on the third level and repairs to the capsules are made on the lowest level. The exterior is made of planks from Sequoia trees stained to bring out the wood’s color and natural grain.

Steadholder

Owner of a 3,000-hectare parcel of land called a steading.

Steading

A 3,000-hectare section of land belonging to an individual chosen during the “Great Enyan Land Rush” lottery. Originally created as a 1,000-hectare plot, the amount of land was increased after the colonists arrived on Enya. The owner of a steading is called a steadholder.

Steele, Lorién

Replaced Steve Hoage as head of ECC’s Department of Land Management. Replaced by Charles Yates in the election of May 05, 0008 E.T. A crew member in the year-long attempt to eradicate the hallucinogenic drug Xanadu Dreams from Sherwood Forest in Xanadu Quadrant.

Stone Mountain Mining and Milling Company

The company created by Beaumont Winston Lovett to mine the minerals, especially Enyanite, located on Stone Mountain Steading. The employees of this company live in Hermione Freehold.

Stone Mountain Steading

The 3,000-hectare steading of Beaumont Winston Lovett and Kirtland Alba Burke located in The Badlands of Outback Quadrant. It is named after Beaumont’s father’s (Anderson Winchester Lovett) favorite alcoholic beverage: Stone Mountain whiskey. It is the only known source of Enyanite.

Street Names

City streets are named after casualties of The Sickness or those who have lost their lives in exploring the planet. Once all these names have been exhausted in a particular city, other names (approved by the Nomenclature Council) may be assigned. No street may be named after a living person.

Strider

Cheyenne Dawn Lovett’s name for her commband, named after her favorite character from the books of J. R. R. Tolkien.

Supernado of 2239

An extreme, EF-5 tornado with winds above 400 kilometers per hour which devastated a 152 kilometer swath of NAAmZ once known as Kansas in the extinct political subdivision of the United States of America in 2239 C.E. It destroyed NKL, which allowed Heininger’s Profile to escape.

Survey Team

A group of colonists with specific skills, knowledge or experience that investigated various locations on Enya in the first few months after landing. Each team was sequentially numbered. Although the Survey Team Leader controls the team’s actions, the shuttle pilot who transports the survey team to its location had ultimate authority to extend or terminate the survey.

Sydney Mendeola Center for Scientific Studies

The building in Starlight dedicated to science on Enya. It holds administrative offices, a museum, a large conference room and other facilities. Named after Dr. Sydney Mendeola, the astronomer who discovered Comet Ximena.

Tabitha

One of Pixel’s kittens who “adopted” Julian Hardesty. Nicknamed “Tabbi.”

Tater

An indigenous root vegetable that is the Enyan equivalent of an Earth potato. It has identical nutritional values and consistency after cooking as a potato but possesses variable flavors depending upon its harvest location. Taters from around Looking Glass Lake have a hint of garlic when cooked, whereas those from Sherwood Forest taste of extra-sharp Cheddar cheese.

Tejas Range

One of the four major mountain ranges of the Crystal Highlands. It extends northward from the Crystal Nexus to a point approximately 260 kilometers short of the Great Northeastern Ocean.

Tennessee Walker

The Tennessee Walking Horse has a finely chiseled head without appearing dainty, large eyes and short, erect ears. The neck is long and refined with a clean, thin throat latch. The horse has a long, sloping shoulder with equally long, sloping hips. The top line is shorter in relation to the ventral midline to allow for a long, striding overstep when gaiting. The body is substantial, with long, clean legs. It’s acceptable for the hind legs to be slightly cow‑hocked or sickle‑hocked. It generally ranges from 14.3 to 17 hands high (1.4986 to 1.7272 meters) and weighs between 335 and 447 kilograms.

Tennille, Ian

There and Back Again

The title of a journal published by Cheyenne Dawn Lovett relating her experiences in Sherwood Forest, where she spent months trying to return to Starlight after defending herself from attempted rape. The title was a tribute to J. R. R. Tolkien, a twentieth century author on Earth.

Three Sisters

A city in NWT located at the mouth of the Rodin River North where it empties into Burke’s Bay. Established by Kaitland, Kirtland and Kourtland Burke in 0002 E.T., it is the major distribution point for foodstuffs from the quadrant’s farms and ranches.

Three Sisters Station

The HyperLoop facility in Three Sisters that receives and dispatches passenger and/or cargo convoys. It is a multi-level building and includes platforms for passenger capsules, docks for loading and unloading cargo capsules, a repair facility and a commercial area with shops and a food court. Departures leave from the top level, arrivals occur on the second level, cargo is loaded and unloaded on the third level and repairs to the capsules are made on the lowest level. The exterior is White Enyanite.

Tiara River

The southern fork of the Raimbault River in East Farthing Quadrant which empties into the Great Southeastern Ocean just south of the equator. It was named after Tiara Carl who, along with her twin sister, Tamara, explored it. Along with the Raimbault River, it forms the northern border of The New Serengeti and separates The New Serengeti from the Elder Woods.

Transportation Modes

There are four methods of transportation on Enya: PERT, foot or horse, aircars and shuttles. The PERT system is used within cities; foot or horse is used for short to intermediate travel, usually less than 20 kilometers; aircars are used for longer travel, up to around 5,000 kilometers; and shuttles are utilized for the longest trips. Since aircars are not allowed inside Enya cities, every city has a Carport built outside city limits to store Personal Aerial Vehicles, or, as they are colloquially known, aircars.

Tubular Bells

An indigenous plant with fragrant, colorful flowers found on the edges of clearings and around fresh water. The stalks can reach five meters and be up to 10 centimeters in diameter; the flowers appear as bells hanging down in masses of as many as 100 individual blooms. The petals are a deep, royal purple with gold streaks on the inside and a dozen black stamens are tightly packed and look like a bell clapper. Each individual flower is 15 to 20 centimeters in diameter and can be as long as 30 centimeters. There are two types of Tubular Bells: Alpha, which has individual stalks; and Beta, which is the scandent version. The Beta version produces more blooms than the Alpha does, lasts longer and produces a more pleasing and longer-lasting fragrance.

UN Peacekeeping Forces

Military arm of the United Nations, it is divided into four branches: Space, Ground, Air and Navy. UNPF(S) uniforms are black and gold. UNPF(G) uniforms are brown and gold. UNPF(A) are light blue and gold and UNPF(N) uniforms are dark blue and gold. Light-blue berets and high-topped boots are worn with the uniform. Various types of camouflage uniforms are worn when necessary. A Peacemaker and two additional magazines, an Individual Survival Kit and a mini-PADD are standard issue.

Union Partner

The twenty-third century’s term for a ceremony between two individuals binding them together in an open-ended manner previously known as a “marriage.” A Union is a more permanent and a more personal relationship than a cohabitation and is a much rarer occurrence; dissolution of a Union is even rarer. Union partners cannot enter into a cohabitation contract during the Union. A Union has no set ending date and further restricts activities of the Partners outside the Union.

The planet-wide government that replaced all independent governments on Earth in 2109 C.E. following the Great Jihad of 2106B2107 C.E.

Universal Replicator Matrix

Developed by the P⁵ Group in 2155 C.E., the URM is an outgrowth of twenty-first century 3D printers. The URM (or copier) produces a duplicate item using a master matrix stored in a portable memory unit. The master matrix results from a scan of an original item and can be easily transferred to other URMs. Scans and duplications can require several minutes, hours or days depending on the item’s complexity. The URM uses any material to construct a duplicate but is usually limited to items no longer useful. There are four sizes of URMs: small, medium, large and very large. Each size contains the “blueprint” for all other sizes. Although food can be created, none of this food has any nutritional value. Scrap materials inputted into the URM are evaluated and their value credited to the individual’s bank account; likewise, the cost of an item, based on the energy required to create it, is debited from that same account.

Vanilla Grass

The Enyan equivalent of earthen grass. It is bright green and the stalks are triangular with a pointed (but soft) apex. It seldom grows higher than 10 centimeters. Vanilla Grass produces a robust fragrance identical to the flavoring spice of the same name which intensifies when the stalks are crushed.

Vital Statistics, Division of

A division of the Department of Human Services that records each birth, the newborn’s fingerprints, its footprints and a DNA sample. It also maintains genealogical records. At puberty, this division also collects sperm and eggs for retention in case of extreme emergencies.

Wall of Honor

A wall made of White Enyanite upon which is engraved in four-centimeter-high, black letters in chronological/alphabetical order, the names of individuals who have either distinguished themselves by a significant contribution to the planet, died while exploring Enya or during a mission important to the future of the planet or humankind, or who perished during The Sickness. Additional names are proposed each year and voted upon by all Enyans who have reached the Age of Emancipation.

Wall of Memories

A wall made of Black Enyanite upon which is engraved in four-centimeter-high, white letters in alphabetical order by last name, the full name of every First Flight colonist.

Xanadu Dreams

An indigenous, light green, non-flowering bryophyte resembling moss. It is a highly addictive hallucinogenic that immerses the user in an individually specific, erotic state which causes intense, multiple orgasms. Involving all seven human senses, the hallucinations rapidly become overwhelming and the addict will forego all other activities, even hunger, for the next “hit.” It is found only in Sherwood Forest. A user typically mixes the powdered bryophyte with a liquid and drinks what is called an XD Cocktail, but it can also be burned and the fumes inhaled.

Xanadu Quadrant

The southwest quadrant of Gaia, bordered on the north by The Smokies, on the east by The Avalons and on the west and south by the Great Northwestern Ocean and the Great Southwestern Ocean, respectively. The quadrant is composed of three major landforms: the Sherwood Forest in the south, the Hill Country in the center and The Silver Woods to the east.

Xanadu Regional Hospital

A 200-bed facility completed in 0010 E.T. and located adjacent to the Starlight Medical Center in the city of Starlight. It is a three story, 46,452 square-meter building with a White Enyanite and Black Enyanite exterior donated by the Stone Mountain Mine and Milling Company. Originally used as a rehabilitation center for Xanadu Dreams addicts. The principal architect and contractor was Rebecca Zumwalt. The hospital’s Executive Chef is Atheron Saia.

Xanadu Regional Hospital Emergency Room

A section of Xanadu Regional Hospital dedicated to treatment of individuals who have encountered accidents or incidents that require immediate, life-saving treatment. The XRHER is open 26 hours a day, 420 days a year and is staffed by physicians and medical assistants.
